On October 28th, 1996 with 6:15 remaining in the 1st quarter and the Cowboys leading by 3 points, a screen pass is called by the Miami Dolphins on 2nd down with 5 yards to go to counter the blitz of the Dallas Cowboys. The blitz is too fast for quarterback, Dan Marino and he throws an incomplete pass in the direction of Dolphins runningback, Karim Abdul-Jabbar.
NFL referee Johnny Grier calls the pass an intentional grounding and later has the nuances of the screen pass explained to him by Dolphins Head Coach Jimmy Johnson. The Dolphins eventually lose the game by a score of 29 to 10.
