The Jacksonville Jaguars had the ball. It was 4th down with 2 yards to go on the Steelers 43 yard line on January 5th, 2008 in an NFL playoff game. Casey Hampton of the Steelers was tackled by a Jacksonville Jaguar offensive lineman in clear violation of the NFL Rules for Holding.
The failure by the referees to make the correct call cost the Steelers the game.
Note: It took the NFL’s Head of Officiating nearly 3 months to admit the missed call.
April 02, 2008 – Pittsburgh Post-Gazette – Mike Pereira, the NFL’s head of officiating, admitted yesterday that his crew working the Steelers-Jaguars playoff game erred in not calling a holding penalty against Jacksonville on a crucial play that allowed the Jaguars to kick the winning field goal.
